From latex nails to leather-effect manicures, 2026 nail trends are all about thinking outside the box. The latest K-beauty trend to hit our feeds, barcode nails takes the cat-eye trend into the digital age, and we are so here for it.
What are barcode nails?
The viral magnetic cat-eye nail effect opened up a whole new world of opportunity for nail art: They catch the light in a way that gives nail designs a sense of fluid motion. This gives circular designs a dimensional swirling effect, but what about linear designs and stripes? Once activated with the magnet, these designs appear to move up and down, mimicking the motion of a laser barcode scanner.

If you’re into modern nail art, this trippy trend is a must-try. It makes a statement without overwhelming your nails, and it works on any length. Try a single horizontal line for a graphic look on short nails, or if you have more runway, add some stripes for a “barcode” double-meaning. On longer tips, it looks like a futuristic take on the cozy, striped cardigan-nails trend.

How to create barcode nails at home
The best part of the barcode-nails look? It’s way easier to DIY than other popular cat-eye designs, like hearts or French tips. All you’ll need is magnet-compatible polish, a standard gel manicure LED lamp, and a small rectangular magnet.
In terms of polish, dark bases with neon accents are popular to achieve that screenlike laser effect. To make matters simpler: “I’m a big fan of the Dashing Diva One Gel Magnetic Polishes because they combine the base coat and top coat in one formula, which streamlines the process and cuts down on extra steps,” Juli Russell, DIY nail expert and Sally Beauty brand ambassador, told Glamour.

To perfect your cat-eye gel manicure at home, find out everything you need to know (from nail prep to glossy finish) in our comprehensive guide. Specifically to create a barcode design, “hold a rectangular magnet horizontally along the nail bed for about 30 seconds with the thin edge facing upward,” nail artist Chloe Jeong told Allure. Another pro tip from Russell: When you’re happy with each design, cure one finger at a time under the lamp; this will prevent the designs from warping as you’re working on other nails.
